My 7th grade students are embedded in technology- no surprise there, I'm sure. Today's student writers have many tools that allow them to focus more on crafting their story and less on getting every grammatical rule correct. The students at my school are amazing readers & writers. The majority of my students read about 30-40 books a school year. Because of this love of reading, they understand the power of writing. They care about crafting their stories, but they also care about their reader. They believe that spelling and grammar do matter in order to clearly communicate to their reader. They don't fall in love with their first drafts; they revise and edit and revise and edit...a good story is never "done." However, as funding continues to decrease, we find it more and more challenging to create the high quality and engaging "final" drafts that we expect of ourselves as writers doe to lack of resources.
