Many of my 56 'futbol'-crazy third graders come from Spanish speaking homes, though not all. We have students from Vietnam, the Middle East, West Africa, and Northern Europe as well, which allows us to explore cultures and build bridges from Bangladesh to El Salvador. It makes for great classroom potlucks as well. Yay for homemade egg rolls! My kids are just discovering all the opportunities now available to them as "big kids," so they are jumping into our marching band, Girls on the Run, our school soccer team and every other extra-curricular activity that will let them in. Our school is a dual language program, so the students will become bi-literate in English and Spanish. I am on the Spanish side, so they spend half the time with me and half with our vecinos, the English teachers. They receive reading, writing and science instruction in Spanish every other day.
