I teach English as a second language, so all of my students are second language learners. Their families are from all around the world, and they speak more than 30 different languages. Most of them are minorities. Most of them are from very low income families. In some ways, the families vary greatly. Some parents have little to no education and are unable to even write their own name. Some parents had a doctorate or masters degree in their native country but were forced to leave due to war and violence. Coming from dramatically different backgrounds, it is amazing how similar my families are. They all want the best for their children, and they all believe that education is essential for a better future. I teach a small group of newcomers, students that have been in the U.S. less than a year. I also teach a group of 17 kindergarten students. And, I work with all 3rd grade ESL students in math. All of my students will use the iPads and iPods on a regular basis.
