In a tiny rural district in southwest Missouri, our English language learners give our school character and culture. We have students from Romanian, Spanish, and Russian backgrounds, representing 5 different countries. There is a mix of recent immigrants and students born in the USA. They range from Kindergarten to 11th grade. They all strive on a daily basis to master the difficult language of English. Their difficulties with language lead to reading difficulties, which greatly affects the rest of their core subjects. Despite their best efforts, many of their parents do not speak English and cannot help with reading support at home. Another obstacle my students face is a lack of technology, both at home and at school.
