The students at our rural school come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We are a 6-8 school serving about 500 children. Every student gets supplied with the tools they need to be successful, but by middle school the discrepancies are hard to hide. As teachers here, we strive to blur those lines between the "haves" and the "have nots" by making our classrooms neutral zones. This means we supply as much as we can for our students. In my room, every child has the same folder, the same book, and the same pencil. I support individuality and creativity while making sure each of my 166 squirmy, delightful, potential-filled middle schoolers have what is needed to learn and succeed.
