The often invisible part of teaching is lesson planning: the development of processes, exercises and activities, that do not merely spoon feed students bits of data, but foster their own thinking and discovery. The strategies developed by Peter Elbow and others at Bard College's IWT facilitate effective lesson planning by way of their creative analytical strategies--dialectical notebooks, zone writing, loop writing and other approaches--that allow us to, as one philosopher puts it, "look awry" and see more clearly. This particular workshop differs from others in that it targets a specific work, Albert Camus's "The Plague," which is essential reading in our Literature and Philosophy course. The supplemental readings and writing approaches developed at Bard for this particular book will permit me to develop the sort of lessons that our students deserve as they try to navigate this important literary and philosophical work, and to fend off the contagions that threaten our moral well-being.
