I'm convinced that my students eat pencils. As a fifth grade math teacher at a high-need urban charter school in New York, I see how a fresh pencil motivates my kids, at the very least, to get started. A broken or missing pencil provides the most frustrating kind of obstacle. Sometimes the challenge to keep functioning pencils in my students' hands is overwhelming.
