For many students, playing together, i.e. "ensemble", is the key to their social and emotional learning. The music room is where they feel accepted and welcome, and where they find their community. However, due to COVID restrictions, my band and other ensemble students cannot play their wind instruments or sing indoors, and the weather in Maine will not permit outdoor playing for several months. We all miss playing together very much, but we want to stay safe. Each student needs his or her own set of mallets in order to meet the pandemic recommendations for social distancing and sharing of materials. We have percussion equipment (although some of it is very old), but we do not have enough mallets for each student to play without sharing. A new set of mallets, enough for each individual to have their own, will allow us to play music together once again.
