These are all things that many children would learn through books and experiences with family and friends or in early childhood classrooms. Sadly, my students have not had those opportunities. They are lacking in essential vocabulary and experiences that develop background knowledge. We live in a very rural area, yet the school is quite urban. We are surrounded by farms and farming communities, yet most of my children have never left their neighborhood and have no experiences with farms or farm animals. Our school serves a low-income community where approximately 45% of my students are Hispanic and another 30% are African American. Many of my Hispanic students are first generation, so their parents are struggling to learn English themselves. There are virtually no quality early childhood education programs available in the area and none in the neighborhood. They enter Kindergarten already behind because they lack books, vocabulary and early experiences.
