I teach in an urban school system defined by poverty, where over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning they live at or below the poverty level. We are extremely multicultural; 55% of the students are considered non-white, and over 49 languages are spoken. Our school system is faced with issues that plague urban communities, especially absentee parents, drugs, crime, and violence. In order to attend college, students absolutely must have computer skills.
