No two classes are ever the same and this year, as I've moved exclusively into literacy teaching, that has never been more true. I'm teaching two groups of students this year --each with very different kinds of readers, literacy needs and entry points into getting hooked on books. Eighty-four percent of our population receives free or reduced lunch. My students' backgrounds are diverse--first and second generation students from South and Central America, Vietnam, China and local high-poverty neighborhoods. Over half of my students speak English as a second language. They are joyful, thoughtful, funny, brilliant and engaging. More importantly, they are excited to become better readers--they have high efficacy and ownership of their learning and reading lives, so they whine and complain when it's time to shut their books.
