I teach a wide variety of students, from special education students in the 9th grade to AP level seniors. My students come from a range of backgrounds, and have an even wider range of interests. Our school is in a very small town that has been hard-hit by the recent economic downturn. One thing they all have in common is that they love science labs. These labs make what students are learning relevant and interesting. Labs are also instrumental for my special education students. They often struggle to learn difficult scientific ideas, but that struggle is lessened by hands-on experiences that actually show those ideas. I love seeing the proverbial light bulb when a student suddenly understands.
