My school is located in a low-socioeconomic area, and for many of my students' parents, putting food on the table and a roof over their head is a priority, and improving speech and language skills simply is not. Our school is a Title 1 school. Our teachers and staff work endlessly to give our students the advantages that students in higher-income areas have. I, too, would like to give my students access to more. Much of our speech-language therapy materials are old and outdated. While I try to use what I do have the best I am able to, I think that my students deserve more. As a part of speech-language therapy this past Christmas, my students wrote letters to Santa. So many of them asked for IPads and IPods, yet when returned from Winter break and I asked them what Santa brought, the answers were mostly, "nothing" or "shoes" or "clothes" or other essentials. Since Santa couldn't fulfill their wishes, I would love to while giving them a tool to help improve their communication.
