Reading Workshop is one of our favorite times of the day. We curl up with our chosen books, and learn about ourselves and our world through reading. But it isn’t simply a time to relax and unwind. Research supports that time to read, self-selected texts, and a library filled with books are the most effective tools in guiding kids to become successful, prodigious readers. Our Reading Workshop is a critical component in developing students’ skills in comprehension, fluency, language development and general academic success. Through this project, you can ensure that my readers have access to a wide variety of books that reflect their identities, experiences and interests. This selection of books will fill our library with culturally diverse texts to support our reading growth throughout the year. As Black and Brown students, my kids deserve quality books that mirror their lives. As emerging readers, they need a large quantity of books that develop their skills and propel their reading. We need better books and you can help us achieve that!
