My class is a wonderfully diverse group of students. I have 24 students, 16 of which English is not their native language however, they are all eager to learn. They attend a Science Magnet school in California. We are located in a wealthy neighborhood, but we are a Title I school. Because we are a magnet school, 86% of our students arrive on a bus. 32 different languages are spoken in their homes, but together we speak one language- the language of LEARNING. What my students lack is exposure to hearing and speaking English enough to become confident to speak and proficient when tested on their abilities. Providing more opportunities to them to listen not only to others, but to hear themselves as well could be beneficial.
