I teach fifth grade at a school where students are diagnosed as Behaviorally or Emotionally Disabled. The majority of our students are classified as at-risk and/or high poverty children. Our school receives little to no funding for the resources we need. We are often overlooked, because many in the community look at our students as "the bad kids". However, our students deserve a chance just like any other student, if not more! We do not have a PTA, because a high number of our students do not have parents, or are placed in foster homes, group homes, etc. Over 90% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Many of them do not get love, support, or care from anyone EXCEPT the staff at my school. I want to make a difference and show my students that they are capable of success and that the people around them want to see them grow and develop the skills necessary to be an important part of society.
