I teach in an Elementary School in California. The school has about 360 students grade K-5. I teach a Special Education Day Program for students with Specific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairment and Autism grades 3, 4, and 5. Some students are about one grade level below, but many are at least 2-3 years below. Two of my fifth graders are reading at Kindergarten level. Because of this special education eligibility, reading and math comprehension are the most challenging areas. They lots of accommodations and supplemental material to be able to work at their academic level as well as the grade level standard. Visuals and hands-on activities impact them the most in their progress. When they see, they hear, and they do, they will have a greater chance to learn and retain the concepts.
