The target population for this grant is 10th and 11th graders. These students live in the immediate area of the school. Most of them are from single family homes operating on government assistance programs. Their parents cannot afford to buy these children all of the basic school supplies they need. There are many problems facing the community where I work. My school is located in the heart of a high needs district which is difficult to staff. The students are mainly of Latino and African American ethnicity. The percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch program is 8% while the state average is 28%. The area around the school has a large housing complex, with a high incidence of crime. My students are wonderful. They love school and their friends. Every day they arrive happy to see their class mates and to learn new things. The students at this school are kind and respectful. They are always eager to help teachers and support their school.
