They are urban high school students, students in grades nine through twelve. In most ways they are diverse--middle class and poor, white, black, Asian and Latino, A-plus students and borderline dropouts and everything in between. They are athletes, mechanics, cheerleaders, gang members, poets, chefs, rappers, engineers, artists, kids new to the school and kids who have long lived in the neighborhood. They all share one big secret, and sharing that secret has forged a community of strangers. Once a week we gather to eat lunch, to talk, to hear speakers, to inspire, to encourage, to write, and to connect: The secret they share? They each have a loved one in prison. And as they connect and share and learn of others' secrets, the shame they have so long carried drops away. Our website is www.popstheclub.com
