I teach Physical Education to all students in grades K-5 at an elementary school in South Carolina. We have a total of 671 students in these grade levels. The students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, ranging from high poverty, low socioeconomic to upper middle class. The racial composition of the student body is 345 White, 266 African-American, 45 Hispanic, 10 Two or More Races, three Asian, and two Native American. Approximately 20% of the population areas that attend our school are below poverty and/or unemployed. More than 50% of the population within the community includes single parent families. Approximately 50% of students are eligible for free and reduced price meals. Our students have a wide variety of interests, including reading, math, art, music, sports, physical activity, playing with friends, recreation department activities, computer games, and various forms of technology.
