In a community that pushes them to be leaders my students strive for academic excellence. They are competitive, determined and diverse. Competition fuels them, but being behind the rest of the nation doesn't cut it. Our school consistently ranks among the best in California, but in comparison to the entire country we fall short. We give our students the opportunity to take many highly academic classes to contend with others, however, the focus is often on the math and sciences, and consequently our students' ability to comprehend and absorb what they read falls short. They are the type of students who persevere when faced with obstacles. Although this is stressful for them, they continue to challenge themselves academically. Our students' determination to excel in reading is not met because our curriculum does not provide a diversity of literature. I'd like to fill this gap and focus on reading literature that provides them with exceptional people who have faced adversity.
