My students range in age from 5 to 11. I teach students K-5 in our school in East Harlem. My students have disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual and emotional disorders which prevents them from attending a general education school. These wonderful kids might have disabilities but they are so determined and they inspire me everyday. Because our school is located in a very high-need area, many of my students haven't been exposed to many art materials and crafts. When I arrive to teach art, I love watching their eyes light up and big smiles come across their faces. They love expressing themselves (many are nonverbal) and they can do this in my lessons. I feel very rewarded to work with these kids every single day. I want to help them use their imagination and creativity and these art materials will help me do that.
