My second grade students live in hard times. Their parents can't afford to pay for lunch. They live with relatives, are watched by neighbors, and have little space to keep their belongings. They do not know how to care for things that are meaningful to them, since they do not have such things or places to put them. Our school is becoming a mirror image of the same scenario. We do not have things or places to put the few things we do have. School should be a place where children learn about all aspects of life including how to take care of things that are important and worthy of keeping.
