The library is also a classroom. I am a teacher/librarian for fifth and sixth grade students in a suburban school district. We do not have a large amount of low-income students but we have an increasing English Language Learner (ELL) population. We also have an increasing population of special needs students including an autistic support class. Our school budget is subject to a 1 to 2 percent growth cap due to state restrictions and there is no money for "extras." 850 students come through the doors of the library each cycle for class and the library is open to all students at 8th period. The librarian is attempting to turn 8th period into a maker-space to draw more students into STEM related activities.
