In a growing charter school, third graders fill their notebooks with the urban setting that surrounds them. They write of the dogs in their neighborhood, the long bus rides to school, the corner stores. They are constantly pushing themselves to observe what's around them. They know which pieces of writing (mentor texts) inspire them. They strive to make their writing reflect more of themselves.
