My school in an inner city/high poverty neighborhood. Most of my students scored below basic on the state standardized test. They are not exposed to high quality literature at home due to the fact that their families are low income. They are predominately Hispanic and primarily speak Spanish in the home. Sometimes school is their only opportunity to learn English and read literature. When they arrive at school, they are very enthusiastic to learn with their peers and continue their novel reading. Despite debilitating budget cuts, I want to give my students the equitable education they deserve.
