I work in a low income urban neighborhood where most of my students are native Spanish speakers. Some of my students have been to preschool, but for many of them Kindergarten is their first experience with school. My students are challenged to make huge amounts of academic growth during their first year in school. They must learn how to read (in their second language) by the end of the year-keeping in mind that some of them enter Kinderarten not even knowing how to read or write their name. This is a huge challenge for me because the class size is high (I have 31 students and no teachers aide) and the school day for Kindergarten is short (they leave at lunch).
