I teach fifth grade at a title I school where a majority of the kids qualify for free lunch. About 85% of our population is Latino, with many at-risk youth who speak English as a second language. Most of my students do not experience our natural environment on meaningful study trips. Our school district charges us in excess of $400 to use our own district buses for study trips. It seems they also discourage trips by the amount of paperwork they expect of a teacher who wants to do a trip during school. That is why I do weekend trips that use volunteer drivers. The students have an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Many come back years later to talk about how much they learned on our field trips. I follow the kids through HS and college and much of what they learn on field trips influences them by the courses they take later in life. Many kids come back and volunteer on trips and become role models for their younger peers.
