Many of my students have backgrounds I personally cannot wish upon any child. One day a girl came to class very excited and happy. She told me that she had been to see her dad. Thinking she spent the weekend with him I asked where he was. "He's in jail. I went to see him in jail. He's been in there for 8 years. He is getting out in 2 years!" She continued to say that he was falsely accused of drug trafficking and looking forward to his release. Many more students have similar stories to tell, yet the children are full of life and hopeful of their future. When asked if they are going to college, almost all of their hands go up. When asked what they want for their future, they all say better life. As the saying goes, the most unhappy person is the one without hope; in that light, my students are the happiest people around. After all, although they may not many things or even a solid family, they have hope; hope that will keep them looking forward.
