My school is beautifully diverse. Fifty-six percent of my students receive free meals at school. Sixty percent come from homes where English is not the primary language. Special education students are mainstreamed into the classroom. Instruction for all subject areas occurs throughout the day in one classroom. We are completely self contained. A huge challenge facing students in general is a lack of motivation. They appear to be "disengaged" from learning. Their talents and abilities have yet to be tapped and revealed because they are disconnected from themselves, each other, their families and their world. Students and parents are afraid to take risks and try something different for fear of failure or the unknown. My intention is to turn them on and tune them in to real learning. Creating an original opera provides a novel experience through which students grow academically, socially and emotionally.
