I have the pleasure of working with 32 energetic four year old students who are naturally curious and eager to learn about and interact with the world around them. This is such an important age when so many lifelong habits are being established. My students live in a low socioeconomic area, many in apartments, and don't have the luxury of being able to go out into a yard to play. Our outdoor activity time is often the only opportunity they have to run around and play in a safe environment. Unfortunately, we have very little equipment for them to use. Moreover, they need to share this equipment daily with 30 additional Pre-K students and over 100 Kindergarten students. Because so many students have to share, what little equipment we do have, falls quickly into disrepair. Severe budget cuts have made it very difficult to just replace these basics and have thereby made it difficult to fulfill our school's responsibility to promote physical development and good physical health.
