I teach Concert Band to students in Grades 5-8 in a large inner city Pre-K - 8 school. It's my ninth year at this school, and my 18th in the district. Musical opportunities are limited, and many students come to Band without having ever taken a music class before. They are enthusiastic about performing and eager to learn, because playing an instrument is fun! The problem is lack of financial support. When I came to the school there were no instruments, supplies, music stands, or music. Thanks to dozens of donations and many grants from Donors Choose we've built our program to the point where we have 60 students in the Band! Each year take them on subsidized field trips to the NJ Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera, the Joyce Theater for Dance, and the NYC Ballet. We're always looking for new experiences and activities to enhance our students' musical education.
