Our school is a public elementary school in an ethnically diverse city in Massachusetts. Many of my students are newcomers to this country and need a great deal of support to enable them to acquire English while simultaneously accessing grade-level curriculum. Some of my students already speak English fluently but need to develop their knowledge of academic language in order to be successful in school. Others were actually born here and are being raised in a bilingual environment. One of the greatest challenges facing these students is that they lack the background knowledge necessary to understand the curriculum. Many of the teaching resources we use in the classroom are intended for native English speakers and may be lacking in instructional supports for English Language Learners which means that classroom teachers and ELL teachers alike spend many hours trying to adapt materials to make them more accessible to our ELLs.
