Our high school students are all about taking that second look. Here we recognize that everyone has a story, and that knowing each other's stories is the key to true understanding and community. My students know this because the system has failed them and they have come to this school, an "alternative" school, for what is for many a "last chance." Most of my students have been labeled as "troubled teens," but actually, they are fierce and loyal and resilient. And they are brave. For three years now, they have worked to dispel the negative associations tied to our school by writing and publishing their stories. They have found release through writing about their experiences with poverty, homelessness, abusive environments and drug use. They have chosen to become transparent in order to take hold of their futures in a positive, powerful way through revisiting their pasts. Mostly, though, they find purpose in the idea that through their courage, others will know that they are not alone.
