This project will create a class set of 5 Kindle Fires with carefully curated apps and web based programs, so that students can work in groups to use technology in classroom based math learning activities. In particular, Desmos will be used to support investigations and group problem-solving activities that are already integrated into the curriculum. Further, tasks will be developed to support students' engagement with Khan Academy, an online resource that can be used as well to support a 'flipped' classroom. By being able to access this resource in class, students will be supported in using it outside of class as well with their own devices or with communal computing resources. Finally, well designed math education games such as SUMAZE, POLY-UP, Dragon-Box Algebra, and Wuzzit Trouble will be side-loaded and activities will be designed to support student's engagement with, and reflection on, these mathematical micro-worlds. Access to technology remains an on-going challenge for publicly funded schools serving diverse working class communities, including our school. While research on the use of digital technology in mathematics education has been growing since the 1970's, many students still have very little experience with the power and impact of learning mathematics through interacting with the 'Mathematical Micro-Worlds' provided by well designed math education computer programs. In today's digital age, it is more important than ever for students to have access to using technology while learning and doing mathematics. Thank you for your support!
