My school has over 60% of its student body on a free or reduced lunch plan and is comprised of 90% students of color. We hail from a city of about 150,000 people and find ourselves struggling with the traditional challenges that poverty brings. The vast majority of our students will be the first in their family to go to college and for many, high school will be a new start after a challenging middle school experience. As a college preparatory charter school, we primarily focus on accelerating academic achievement for our students. The kids work hard to grow their intelligence and academic behaviors throughout the year. For one week a year, we shift to an experiential learning focus on a specific topic of students' choosing. We call this 5 day exploration "Week Without Walls" and encourage students to discover their talents and passion outside of the traditional classroom.
