Each morning at 8:30 in the morning I have 19 5 and 6 year-olds lined up at my classroom door, prepared to shake my hand, look me in the eye and pledge to me that they are excited and ready to learn and work hard for the day. I teach first grade in the South Bronx and consider myself lucky to know these amazing children who so earnestly greet me in the morning and pledge their devotion to learning. Nestled between several large housing projects in a high-need community, our school is filled with inquisitive young scholars who are undeterred by their circumstance. I am a Teach For America corps member in my second year teaching first grade and have never been more inspired then now.
