What can I possibly say about my students to do justice to everything they bring to the table? They are amazingly unique, caring, and full to the brim with untapped potential. They are high-poverty at-risk 5th graders in North Carolina (95 of them). Close to half are African-American and almost half are Hispanic with many, many other cultures represented in between. Every single day I am amazed at the things they do in class, the way they treat others, and their need to be loved. They can accomplish anything, but truly know almost nothing. Primarily because of their upbringing, my students' background knowledge, reading levels, social skills, and other indicators of success later in life are extremely low. But, given the chance and the motivation, they will be successful, not just in my classroom, but forever.
