My students are Kindergarten through third grade students that attend an inner-city elementary school in Indiana. The majority qualify for federal free and reduced breakfast and lunch. They come primarily from single-parent homes, and have responsibilities and experiences no elementary student should have to face. Although most of them have attended this school since kindergarten, the entire school staff and the curriculum have changed in the past three years. My students are struggling to make the transition from a failing school to an International Baccalaureate curriculum (we are a candidate school), and learning a lot about the world, and themselves along the way.
