My students are in special education with the diagnosis emotional disturbance; some also have learning disabilities. My class is designed to help them get back into the general education population and stabilize their behavior . They range in age from 14-19, grades 9-12. I have a couple of students who play varsity basketball for our school basketball team. To look at my kids, you wouldn't know they were in special education. They love school, for the most part, sports, music and movies. They keep me young, help me with technology and show me all the up and coming music. Unfortunately most of my students struggle in their personal lives; their parents are not always in the picture; most live with grandparents or other family members. They worry about money, food, and other things that kids shouldn't have to concern themselves with until adulthood. My classroom has become their home base and a place where they feel safe. And I am happy to be their advocate.
