The small town where I teach in Texas was hit hard by the recent recession; thousands of jobs were lost, leaving many of our students with only one working parent, and on very tight budgets. Many of my students reported only having a handful of books in their homes; none of which they would be interested in reading. My students often lack encouragement, and consequently lack inspiration to achieve. Many of them are very intelligent, and have the potential to go to college, but they lack the confidence that they need. I long to encourage my students; I long to engage them and show them how fun reading and learning can be.
