We are a school in an area in Maine with many families who are out of work, with lots of shelters, and just very needy children. We say every day in my class, "We will go to college in 2023." Maybe if they hear it enough they will believe it and work hard to achieve a goal. Many of my 22 students need to constantly move about and require a lot of hands-on learning. I try do as much of this as I can while completing the tasks for the day. First graders are like little sponges who are ready to soak up any information you can pour into their little brains. We have already had a pajama drive (we collected 100 pairs of pj's) and will begin a food drive for our local shelters who lost $30,000 due to cuts. We have many children who live in these shelters at this time, but it's amazing how everybody pulls together to help. Any help that we can have as a school/teacher to reach the children who have so much on their minds at such an early age is appreciated.
