Collaboration, choice, engagement, active learning...these are the qualities I am looking to foster in my classroom. My students' classroom space needs to be designed in a way that can encourage these necessary skills. Students need to be able to move around in an open space that allows for meaningful learning experiences. The multitude of ways to arrange trapezoid tables provides the flexibility of many different classroom layouts that can be used depending on the learning tasks. It is time to rethink the traditional classroom setting of individual, stationary desks. I want my students to have space to spread out materials while working on a group project. I want to see them sitting side-by-side with their Chromebooks working on a shared document. I want them sitting across from each other face-to-face as study buddies or discussion partners. Finally, I want my students to see themselves as partners in learning. A classroom space communicates messages to our students. I would like my classroom to invite students to be active learners and reflect my style of teaching that relies on group work and flexibility.
