My students are 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders attending a K-12 school in an urban neighborhood located in Southern California. Our school provides college preparatory curriculum in the core content areas. While there are many variables, one of the main factors that is preventing students from learning in an engaging, dynamic environment is simply that they are not confident that their answers are valuable. This false belief prevents students from freely verbalizing their valuable thoughts with others. Many students will benefit from having a small and “private” space in the classroom to layout and organize their thoughts.
