My students are from hard working class families. About 65% are Hispanic and the parents often have a difficult time financially. My school houses grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. I share my room, equipment and instruments with about 250 students. The older students are my "right hand" and I put my trust and faith in them. These students, are the nicest, most respectful, cooperative group you would ever want to meet. It is wonderful as a teacher, to be able to see students grow and develop for six years. Because of this unique opportunity to be able to be together for so long, we have a special bond. Sometimes, however money to purchase basic items to keep the program running is an obstacle in our school. Many of the students are on free lunch and don't have the extra cash to buy supplies themselves. My budget is stretched to ensure that students have music and instruments. The small items, like reeds and oils sometimes get left off.
