The Orange County Department of Education promotes the development of art and music programs for all students of all abilities. In order to activate the senses with art and music for severely handicapped students requires the right resources. My special day class is located in a special unit on a regular school site with a full time nurse and many support staff. Most students cannot talk but enjoy sensory feedback through auditory, visual and tactile experiences. They derive meaning, awareness, sensory processing and enjoyment from the tactual experiences of using different types of art medium. Incorporating music into their class greatly increases sensory stimulation and movement. My students need practical experience about the things happening around them. When art and music are nurtured, it can lead to many other areas of learning.
