When my first graders began school this year, many of them were not confident in their math skills. They thought math was "too hard" and it wasn't as fun. As the year has progressed, I have come up with creative ways to make math very hands-on and fun, involving them in real-life problem solving and using all the manipulatives we have in our classroom. However, I teach in a school where the levels of ability in my classroom are very diverse. We have 75% ELL (English Language Learner) students in our school, and over half of my students are ELL and from lower-income families. I find myself struggling to keep all students engaged and learning without having as many materials as I would like. They all love to learn, and I would love to give them more opportunities to explore math hands-on!
