I teach 4th grade in Utah. We are not a title one school, but many of our students are one-two grade levels behind academically. These children have few opportunities for life experiences beyond school. Half of them (640 total) live in low economic households, single parent homes, and a few are even homeless. Many of the parents do not speak English and need translators for SEP conferences. Once I asked my students if they knew the capital of Utah or if they had ever seen the capital building. One boy got excited and said, "My dad works at the capital building!" I was surprised by his answer and asked him what type of work his father did. He said, "He has a machine that pokes holes in the grass!" My students eager to learn. They crave knowledge about their world, but don't know where to access it. My dream is to provide them with as many hands-on experiences as possible so that they can make sense of their world.
