People often tell stories about families who come to America with empty pockets, looking for a chance at a better life. My students are lucky if they even have pockets! As a Teach For America Corps Member, I firmly believe in the transformative power of education and the need for a dramatic shift in the culture of underachievement surrounding many low income schools. Our campus has struggled in the past to provide our students with the kinds of opportunities for which they came to this country. However, my colleagues and I fight every day to ensure that our students can enjoy the same quality education as their more affluent peers. My students are extremely motivated and eager to learn; we just need to provide them with the right tools, which they so deeply deserve but currently don't have access to! This includes reading materials that they can take home with them and keep!
