My first grade class totals 20 students! The student make-up is 50% English Language Learners. Languages spoken within the classroom include Portuguese, Spanish, Creole, and Polish, and all students have varying degrees of English proficiency. All students love books and are very verbal and inquisitive. As students are beginning writers, the class is learning how to put thoughts on paper. Listening to text, syntax, grammar, and tone is very important to students. Reading aloud is a major component for whole group listening, discussing, and asking. Our school is a Title 1 school, meaning a large percentage of the population receives free/reduced meals. Our elementary school boasts 1400 students; 12 of which are first grade classes. This means 240 total students are using one set of books!
